Can a BP cage be too big???
Hi Guys, I need some advice
I have had a BP for 4 weeks and he's been really active at night and in his hide during the day which is good,he also seems quite happy. But when I try to feed him frozen rats he cowers away and just ignores it. I have tried this for 3 weeks now, no luck.
The previous owner fed him live so probably that's the case. But this owner had him in a cage with gravel as a subsrate and a water dish....that's all. He used his water dish as a hiding area as he curled around it. He is 3 years old and I don't believe that he was happy in that environment and eating readily. He also has a big cut towards the end of this body. The previous owner claims that he got burned as he curled around a heat lamp for warmth.
Anyway these past few days,he has been hiding in his hide all day and night. He also hasn't eaten in a while. Probably the cage is too big. If that's not the cage I might try live for a while.
That's the cage he has been living in for 3 years.

for an adult, there isn't really such a thing as "too big." in the wild, they thrive in the biggest cage of all.
first thing's first: make sure your husbandry is 100% SPOT ON. are all temps on point, and heat sources regulated? if so, the snake might just be taking a while to adjust. the older they are, the longer they can take to be comfortable.
also, how are you preparing the f/t feeder?

20L is not to big. If that's what it is. Gravel? I'm glad you have him. He should have two hides. One on the cool side one on the hot side. Take a look at the pinned or sticky threads on how to properly set up a glass tank. He might need more time to acclimate to his new home. And a hiding snake is a happy snake. Make sure your rats are proper temp at feeding. Some are extremely picky eaters. Also look at the my snakes not eating sticky and hides my way sticky.

yes.
and you need a thermostat, like, as of yesterday. that should be your #1 priority right now.

Re: Can a BP cage be too big???
I asked a friend if I can use a thermostat for multiple cages if they have the same temp requirements and he said he wouldn't suggest it. He says that's why they have rack systems.
