New addition BRB

The moss actually faired rather well , maybe I just got lucky .
I used to get it from the local woods in clumps with the root system intact . Even so , occasionally I used to freshen things up with new clumps .

I ran it by my fiance and he says it wouldn't be a loss to try it - so we're going to.

What's to lose

The moss is free , I used to get clumps with roots attached and always got it from quieter parts of the woods in the shady areas and from raised or sloping ground and made sure it was already damp / lush and healthy ( so obviously no dry or dead stuff ) as I said and simply lay it over the top of the substrate , spray the substrate first and also the moss roots , then spray the moss daily ...

Mine used to live under the moss during the day and on top in the evening ....


I even experimented in the beginning because so many people had said that BRBs don't need damp / moist conditions and they did so well in dry setups and ONLY hatchlings liked it dampish ..

That never made any sense but I'm no expert on these matters ...BRBs did originate from tropical rainforests I understand so why would they like it dry !?!?

So initially I started by having the moss "lengthways" over HALF the viv ( inc warm and cool side ) and I kept the other half of the viv much , much drier .

MY results were clear .... The 2year old BRB spent 100% of the time on the damp mossy side . The dry side was never even used .
I even carefully placed some table tennis balls on the dry side just to see if there was any action on that side ... The balls were never even moved a cm - conclusive proof that the BRB actually PREFERRED to be on the damp side ..... DOH !

You will still see comments and videos of young and adult BRBs in dry set ups of course ....

Thank you so much for your insight, Zinc. It's overwhelming sometimes, learning about all of the different biomes snakes have to have...but I must admit, putting his tank together was extremely exciting!! Fiance and I are going on a nature walk with the pups tomorrow and I am going to try to nab some forest moss. Should I clean the moss before introducing it into the tank?
I've noticed that our BRB stays in the most humid, damp spot in the tank... right in the middle of his temp gradient.. so about 76-78. And as soon as I mist the sides of his enclosure and his fake plants (to stimulate the effect of the rain in the rain forests) he comes out of his hide and slides under the spray and usually stays active for 20-30 mins before returning to his hide.
At night he has been very active, which makes me happy. I'm so thankful for this forum.

As I think I mentioned I'm certain BRBs prefer the humid conditions but time and time again I see BRBs being kept in real dry conditions and defending them saying that ONLY hatchlings NEED more damp or humid conditions ... Puzzling given where they originate from but I'm far from being any kind of expert . I just had a hunch and my findings over the years confirmed that MINE most certainly preferred the humid setting .

As regards the moss .... I used to remove any branches or seedlings and give the clump of moss ( roots attached ) a quick swill or nose down . I only got it from secluded areas and only chose healthy , damp , lush feeling clumps .
