Question Soon to be BP owner

Hello, I am new to this site and I have so many questions. I am very excited to get a pet snake but I need help.

    Where do I buy snakes?

I heard pet stores are bad but this is honestly all I have near me; All I have seen are awful reviews. People here seem more like experts so I hope to get some sort of advice/help.
    (PetLand
    PetCo
    PetSmart)

I apologize for bothering anyone here. I just honestly need all the help I can get so I can bring home a Ball Python!

    welcome
to the forum! you're not bothering any of us.

look on MorphMarket.com as a good place to start: you can search local or anywhere, and narrow search results by morph and price. it's where i got my latest girl Spaghetti. it can also show you local reptile shops in your city, or you can do a google search to see if there's any reptile shops near you and stop by.

Question Re: Soon to be BP owner

Would it be a good idea to check out the pet stores listed?

    Sorry- just asking.

Please try to avoid those stores, there are exceptions but most of them are just not good for the hobby or the animals. Most of the time you will pay too much and they will try to sell you stuff that you don't need or just be flat out wrong as to how to care for the animal. The health of the animal is almost always questionable from those places.

Don't EVER be sorry for asking questions about your interest in snakes. People on this site are excellent helpers; we all want you to become an excellent snake parent.
It's better to avoid the pet stores because they often have employees who don't know much about properly caring and providing for snakes. Sometimes they sell snakes with problems that require an experienced keeper.
    The site: http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/
has many sellers, good advice, and the Board of Inquiry (BOI). You can search sellers to see what has been posted about them, both negatively and positively. Check the BOI no matter where you find your new friend.
Or what about the SPCA? I have a couple rescues from them. My 11 yr old cousin got her first snake, a lovely anery corn, from the SPCA.
Just remember, snakes last a looooong time, so you want a really good fit!
    Welcome to BP.net!

Question Re: Soon to be BP owner

Another small question, how often should you handle a snake?

I handle almost daily, for 30 minutes or so. But do not handle for 48 hours after they eat.

when they first come home, leave them alone for about a week: no feedings, no handling. after their first or second successful feeding, you can slowly introduce yourself with ~5-10 minute handling sessions a couple times a week. as they start to thrive you can handle them more. i handle my 2.5 year-old p much whenever i want now.

Welcome!! PLEASE don't be afraid to ask questions. We were ALL beginners at one point. You've certainly come to the right place for help. There are plenty of great people on here willing to share their knowledge and experience if you're willing to listen. You're doing the right thing by asking questions FIRST and being prepared to properly care for the animal before bringing it home. That being said, you'll still have questions long after you bring your snake home, and that's perfectly fine. None of us know everything. We look forward to sharing what we know with you and seeing the progression when you're ready to bring your snake home.

Thats cool your researching first.. Good deal.
Check the classified thread section on here, several of our Admins & Site Mods are experianced breeders who do nothing but breed for Health and disposition. You'll be able to find a great animal. You may soend $100-$150 More, but you'll save $500 in Vet bills if bought from Chain/Pet Stores.
Mites and Respiratory Infections can be a nightmare.
