Personally I'd buy a backup generator. You can get a 4000 watt generator on e-bay with free shipping for only $229. It's a life saver, I have a 4000 watt and a smaller 800 watt just in case. I also have extension cords and power strips and run my fish tanks, refrigerator, freezer, and snake rack. I also crank up the generator every year just to make sure it works, last year it had a gas leak, luckily I caught it and fixed it before a real emergency. It's cheap insurance. Be sure to get a four cycle instead of a 2 stroke where you have to mix the gas and oil, those are not very reliable. My generator is whisper quiet.
