Covering a cage top for humidity

I have the dreaded aquarium setup for my noodle and have been fighting the heat/humidity battle since I got him a couple months ago. We put a single sheet of aluminum foil over the top with holes for the lights and less than an inch on either side for air. This seemed to help a little, although we still needed to mist down the enclosure once or twice a day to keep the humidity straight.

Well, getting cold here and the heat has been on for a week straight, which destroys the humidity of the whole house. Our household humidity is in the low 30's! Now when we go to mist at the morning and evening times, humidity in his cage is low 40's.

I was thinking of getting an acrylic sheet fit to his cage top with holes cut for the lights, but I wanted to get some opinions before I move forward, like is the acrylic effective and safe? Are there better DIY options?

I use Reflectix, you can pick up a roll at most large hardware stores. Relatively cheap, can be cut to shape, can be used for other things, easy to keep clean.

Cut it to fit and then put duct tape around the edges to make a good seal. In theory the red lamp heats the air on warm hide side, and the warmed air vents through the hole on other side, providing a small, constant air flow.

Still need to mist the enclosure every day but that's not a big deal. Usually I'll mist in the morning, and/or in the evening when I re-fill the water bowl.

I like reflectix personally. It is bubble wrapped in foil insulation. You can buy it at lowes or home depot. I used spare pieces i had laying around to do this,


You also don't need to leave much of a leave gap for air because your lights sitting on top of the cage are pulling the humidity and warm air up and out through the holes on the top.

Plexiglass works well too but its kind of a pain to have cut around a lamp.

Thank you both, I'm going to look into the reflectix, that seems much easier than getting acrylic cut.

For your own comfort, I would run a humidifier in the house. My husband and child both get nosebleeds when it drops below 50%, and we all dry out and have itchy skin. It would help your tank out, too.

The top of my tank is covered with foil under the CHE, reflectix for the rest. I have a water bowl under under the CHE, and the hide on that side also has Sphagnum moss that I spray down every day if need be.

My wife suggested that. Every winter we have dry noses, scratchy throats when we wake up, and start daily use of moisturizer.
