My two BIs are very laid back, especially considering their histories.

Elenore was found on a porch of a woman with a rat problem by an exterminator. He gave her to his adult daughter who had twin toddlers. The snake was placed in a tub full of Aspen with a folding lid, no heat, no water.

The toddlers would pull the Boa out all of the time and drag her around the house. When their Pit Bull started to try and get it out of the tub is when I rescued her.

Elenore is extremely gentle and has never bitten.



Punch, is a 10 yo BI that had a Pit Bull problem as well (I'm not picking on Pit Bulls here). The dog destroyed his cage so the owner let the snake free range and live in the rafter beams of his house to keep away from the dog.

I have cut Punch's food intake in half and doubled the time between feedings from the original owner and Punch has never been aggressive even when it's time to eat.

My daughter was deathly afraid of snakes. Here she is with Punch and she had only held Elenore once before.


I can't comment on Hoggies, but I would not hesitate to own one of those either.

Anoying semantic point: both are BCI (boa constrictor imperator), they as just further identified by locale each of which has its own set of unique features but not enough to consider them different subspecies. Some locals do, however, have their own subspecies like Suriname and Guyana which are both BCC (boa constrictor constrictor) or Argentina's BCO (boa constrictor occidentalis). And just to make it even more fun, it is now preffered to drop the "constrictor", so it's just st BI or BC (but hopefully not BO). Incidentally, almost all morph animals you see; albino, motley, hypo , etc will be BI.
I highly reccomend reading The Complete Boa Constrictor by Vincent Russo, its like a boa bible. Great info on care and husbandry and encyclopedic listing of all locales and subspecies.

Suriname and Guyana are the same thing, they're not even really separate localities. The only thing separating them is a political border, they're often separated by coloration independently of where they were found. Localities cannot have their own subspecies, either. Localities are within subspecies. BCC and BCI are now independent species, the rest have yet to be separated.

Hogs are not considered a dwarf locale, dwarves would stay 5' or under (usually under). Some breeders do seem to have smaller Hogs, but I've talked to individual owners with their stock that get Hogs bigger than the breeder's stock. You can keep Hogs small feeding them less, just like with any other snake, but their size is comparable with Colombians. They average 5'-6' with the potential to get 8', although 8' Hogs are admittedly rarer than an 8' Colombian you're still going to pretty much expect and average-sized boa constrictor.

Unless you have a verified pure Colombian, all "Colombians" in captivity are of unknown and mixed heritage of pretty much any locality or ssp/sp you could think of, so technically they are not a locality, either.

Kind of off topic but check out sunset boas if you like Hogs. They are pretty neat looking.

I just bought my first boa, a female hypo hog island, a few weeks ago at the Tinley NARBC. She is an absolute puppy, which is one of the reasons I bought her. Also what drew me to her were the colors typical of hogs that Sauzo mentioned, she has those gorgeous oranges and pinks and the hypo makes it even brighter.

My advice is to strictly buy in person if you can help it that way you can get a feel for the snakes individual temperament, and see what their colors look like in person (my girls colors do not show well in my pictures). I had hundreds of snakes to look at, weeded it down to a few, then saw this girl and that was that. Much more fun experience than picking one out online, and you can be more sure of your decision I think. I made myself wait months until Tinley, it was tough but worth it.

Be ready for your boa to be your favorite over the balls. They are much more fun to handle!

i will for sure be buying in person my local petstore the owner is going to order in a couple and is going to let me pick out the one i like... i dont really like buying any live animal online because you just never really know what you are going to get (not putting any breeder out their down its just personal preference) i get all my animals from my local petstore because he will order in anything i want and he will make sure it eats and is not agressive or anything like that before he hands it over to me... thank you
