Ball Python Newbie
Hey,
I’m totally new to Ball Pythons but really want to get one. I’ve been a massive fan of snakes since I was a kid and love the look of Ball Pythons. From what I’ve read, they are a relative docile snake and make really good pets. I like the look of the Orange Ghosts!

I’ve done a lot of research into how to look after them – how to make the right temperature, what they eat and so forth, and am now am looking into how best to care for them.
I’ve seen a few vivariums for sale online and had some questions about requirements and about the snakes themselves. I hope you guys can help:
What size vivarium should I be looking at for this type of snake?
What is the best temperature controller I can get?
How do I tell whether a snake I buy is healthy or not?
Thanks for any answers!

The vivarium size is going to depend on the size of the snake and what type of enclosure you're going with. For an adult female, plan on needing a 40 gal glass enclosure (which I don't recommend for various reasons), a 4ft x 2ft pvc enclosure, or a 41qt plastic tote (my favorite and recommend type of enclosure). You won't ever need anything larger than that.
If you're buying the snake as a hatchling. Deborah has a great guide on how to set up a 6qt tub for it.
I recommend a Spyder Robotics Herpstat. They're very reliable.
As for health... buy from a well known reputable breeder. Buying from Craigslist or a chain like petco is one way to guarantee your snake will NOT be healthy. Good breeders can be a bit more pricey but IT IS WORTH IT.
