My sons mostly name my animals and seem to enjoy arguing over the best ones. It also gives a reference point when speaking about them and giving a name shows a bit more respect and appreciation than calling him\her an it or a generic reference of morph. I understand with large collections or growing collections will make such things more difficult, which is my issue, but I think it is worth a try especially if the animal makes an impact in your life.

Understood SIR or MA'AM. just as i understand is hmmmm, showing "respect" would be letting "wild" animals be WILD and not for sooooo many people on here a "HOBBY", my snakes are my PETS so it gives me a reason for living and earning money.. There are so many other hobbies out there not including wild animals, animals have feelings just as we do that is why setups have to be appropriate so "no stress" is brought onto those precious animals except being taken from their HOMELAND for "HOBBIES"(smh)....

b/c it's fun, it personalizes them, helps track your pets if u have more than 1 of the same morph, creates sentiment, etc. etc.
this is funny because everything you mentioned names being given to doesn't have heart beats and can't make decisions for themselves, so that is not the same thing, nice try though....

We are human, therefore everything has a name - we personify everything, little kids name dolls and if asked will explain how their dolls are "feeling" that day; it's just a part of being a highly evolved social being, it's how we classify the world around us into meaningful ways.

I work with wild animals all the time, none of which will come when called, (even the education animals I train have more response to food and reward cues than to their names) but nearly everything ends up with some kind of name, usually a feature of their injury or rescue despite everyone having a specific ID number. When you have a bunch of patients, it's much faster to ask the vet "Hey, can you take a look at Crooked's eye?" instead of "Hey, can you look at box turtle, umm... [walk over to find the file] number BT-124H's eye?".

-Crooked had a head injury and tilted his head to one side for a while-

    Besides, naming things is fun.

Lol i can tell you that my snake is by no means your technical "wild" animal. You can show respect for an animal whether it is your pet, a wild animal, or your cash cow. It doesn't matter what type of creature it is, it still deserves it.

I can't quite follow your wording from before. Are you against keeping snakes? Are you saying that they should be left in the wild to be respected and since they were captured and now captive bred they no longer need that respect? I also don't understand your stance on the "hobby".

I think snake keeping can be a hobby and the animal can still be respected and treated properly as well as being used for monetary gain. How is that different from the snake being a "pet" animal as you say yours are that you are also using for monetary gain?

Sorry if i am missing what you are trying to say but this is how i interpreted it.

Re: Let's hear what everybody names their BP!

My snakes have names as did any other pet I had. They were, even though they do not feel the same way, my friends. Names personalize them, making them unique in your eyes. Separating them from the masses, just as someone gave you and I a name. I know I don't always go to my mother when I am called, but she gave me a name nonetheless. Who knows, maybe she thought of me as a sort of 'pet' when I was a helpless baby, unable to care and think for myself. (Certainly seemed that way with the many colorful dresses and bows my baby pictures displayed.) Lol

Why do I name my animals? I believe it gives them more character. It's certainly easier to call them a name than 'albino amel cornsnake' or 'Sterling possibly lesser ball python'. To me, it is fun and enjoyable, this name game that I learned at a very young age (I am making this sound like I am very old lol). Do I think they'll love me back or show any sort of appreciation for having a name? Not really. I know they just appreciate the fact that they have room in their enclosures and a steady supply of water, rats, and a heated spot. Naming them is purely for my enjoyment.

    Two reasons for me.
    1. It makes them more endearing to my wife and family who are less than thrilled with them at times.

    2. My breeders all get names which will be used for IDs for the hatchlings. For instance... Two of mine are a GHI female named Onyx and a male Pastel Clown named Homey. The female's shortened ID I keep on whatever tub she's in is O1 and the male's is H2 (I already have another that starts with H). Each of their hatchlings IDs will start with O1H2 so I can better track their genetics.
