RHP's
The ambient temps in my tanks need a boost.
Already have UHT's for the warm hides.
RHP's: Pro Products vs. Reptile basics?
I e-mailed both vendors this afternoon with questions.
Any users of both have preferences?
Anything I should know?
Thanks!

I don't have any experience with Reptile Basics or Pro Products for that matter as mine are due to arrive today or tomorrow. But I have called and talked to Bob at Pro Products and he was extremely helpful. He actually prefers people to call so he can make sure they get the proper size/wattage RHP for their application. He is a little anti-UTH so be prepared for that. He gave me about a 5 minute discourse in the dangers of heat tape, etc. when I called to order my RHP's.

Thanks.
The Pro site had a list of questions. I answered those. If he really wants to discuss on the phone, I will. (for some reason, can't stand talking on the phone, and always do all I can to avoid it.)
Heat tape does get very hot (HLH Reptiles has a video demonstrating that). The small UTH's I have never seem to, even w/o T-stats (which I do use). The benefits of "belly heat" always made a lot of sense to me, but I really don't know the physiology...maybe radiant from the top is better.
I should have considered it, but I just wasn't thinking about the ambients in our house when I set these tanks up, and assumed everything good-to-go with just the UTH's. I really like how little energy they use, but obviously, they don't use enough!

Re: RHP's
I have both and I would go with Reptile Basics because of personal reference. Both work well and never had an issue with either in a course of 4 years.
The Pro Products RHPs don't warrant the price. They claim to have a UL certficate but they don't provide a number of the cerificate or a link. Tried to search for it on the UL site and didn't find anything. Seems shady to me.

Thank you!
Reptile Basics got back to me right away. (They always do.) Still have yet to receive a response from Pro. Was wondering about the cost difference, and all other things being equal, that matters. Also, I prefer the black over the beige tone that Pro Products shows.

Yea, he's a good guy. He doesn't try to upsell you either. Just gives you information and lets you decide.
His RHPs are also good quality and I like that it's plastic so there's no chance of anything to rust.
Meant to say preference* in my last post. Lol.

Re: RHP's
I just got my RHP's in and installed them today. I was in the same boat as you. I thought I could get away with just heat tape, but I was wrong. I was going to go with reptile basics, but Animal Plastics accidentally shipped me a white T8 instead of a black one. So I chose the Pro Products RHP purely for aesthetic reasons. It matched the cage. Lol. It seems to be a decent quality and installation was pretty simple and straight forward. I did have a little mishap with them however. I placed my order over the phone and they wrote down the wrong expiration date of my credit card. When I finally called them back after a week of not getting a shipping notification and noticing I hadn't been charged, they told me that they had been trying to get ahold of me, but for some reason the call wouldn't go through. That's when I found out they wrote down the exp. date wrong and I believe they probably wrote my phone number down wrong as well. It was a minor annoyance, but it did keep me from bringing home a BP this last weekend from Repticon.
BTW, animal plastics was great to deal with even though they shipped the wrong color cage. They offered to ship me a black one and provide me a label to return the white one, and offered to credit me $50 to keep the white one. I didn't really want to wait another few weeks for the right cage so I took the discount. In the end I was happy and they saved some money having to pay return shipping on the cage and having to ship out another one.
