I have used cypress mulch with Retics, however, I personally would not use it with BP's. Just because I am very paranoid about them eating a chunk of it with their food item and causing a blockage of some sort. As far as smell goes, we use to rinse it down really well first, let it dry, and then put it in the enclosures. The smell was not an issue. We bought it from a plant nursery down here in South Florida. Be careful, sometimes the cypress mulch you get at Home Depot and Lowes are only "part" cypress mulch (read the fine print). Good luck and let us know if you give it a try.
