Maybe they will figure it out after one of the snakes goes cannibal. Sure, co-habbing is a cheap way to keep your stock, until they start eating each other...

I've been to a lot of smaller pet shops over the years and have seen this several times. Most owners tell me that they aren't in there together long. As far as cannablism is concerned yes it can happen but its like finding a needle in a haystack unless of course you place a kingsnake inside that tank.. then the corn snakes would disappear. As far as the other eating each other it could happen but very rare case. Its a common occurance in smaller type pet shops who don't have the housing space but have the need. Petco and Petsmart have similar issues.. A good rule of thumb is like others mentioned don't buy from them.. Make them get more tanks or less snakes. Or maybe get a job at the pet shop and inform the owner of why its not a wise idea and become responsible for the care. I did that when I was 19.. worked at a small pet shop as the reptile handler and care taker.. Love getting paid for caring for reptiles...

My local Petco is just about as bad. I've seen four BPs in a (maybe) 20 gallon tank at the wrong temperature and wrong humidity. I've seen BRBs at 40% humidity, yet they hire a "reptile specialist." I've yet to see any special knowledge applicated there and I feel bad for even supporting them by purchasing feed or tanks. Last time I was there I caught a bird that they let loose for them because they were too incompetant to realize that swinging a net at it resulted in it fleeing, whereas I simply walked up to it and put my index finger beneath its breast, it stepped up, and I covered its wings. The majority of the people at these franchise stores, and even at most local petstores, have no idea what they're doing half the time. They just show up for a paycheck.

Many times the reality of retail necessitates things to be done differently than we would do in our own homes. That is why I will give pet retail stores the benefit of the doubt when I see things like this (when there are no aggregious lapses in care, which this is not).

There are 2800+ Petco and PetSmarts across the country and I'm sure several thousand smaller pet shops. They're easy targets and everyone gets up in arms when posts like these show up (justified or not). In truth, a lapse in care is the exception and not the rule otherwise they would not be in the business that they are... or at least not nearly as successful. Unfortunately, not everyone working there can possibly be an expert in everything. It's an unreal expectation to think they should be. That's why they hire people with different skill sets and work on educating all of their employees to fill in the gaps.

The one thing that couldn't be further from the truth, though, is the idea that pet store employees don't care about what they do. The number one reason people choose to work in a pet store instead of anywhere else (where they could certainly collect an easier, likely larger, paycheck) is because at their core they care about animals. I've personally witnessed many of these stores, large and small, spend many times the retail value of an animal on proper veterinary care because it is the right thing to do for the animal. I'll say it again just so I'm clear - almost without exception, they care about the animals in their care.

I agree with this whole heartedly! In my experience the employees at pet stores (even big box stores) are major animal lovers and care deeply. That doesn't mean they are always experts... but they do the very best they can.

Also I try to give the benefit of the doubt with housing/enclousures as long as the animals are healthy, as often none of the animals stay in those enclosures long term. For example, our local Petsmart puts all their snakes on a 48 hour quarantine on arrival at the store, and they are often all spoken for before they are cleared. It isn't all that different than a snake being shipped or moved in a small container... it is only very short term in the majority of cases.

I've talked to the owner and he said that he is in the process of getting more cages for the animals. He also told me that he has told his daughters(running the store) not to take in anymore snakes if they do not have the space.
