    Yep. The probe can certainly be off the ground just as long as the heat isn't coming from the ground.

    So you are saying to place the probe between the bottom of tank and mat?

    Yep! It's the most efficient way to go when using heat mats and other under-tank type heaters.

    We're sticking with smalls! And I have permission to buy a t-stat now ^^
