Fairly common thing to happen. And yes, iguana tails do regenerate, they start out black and will eventually turn green again, though without any pattern, and they will look slightly different than the original. And it's a slow process.
The other iguana was rehomed to someone familiar with aggressive iguanas, so no he has been out of the picture for quite some time. She lost her tail because she escaped her cage and found a way outside and I think one of the cats tried to grab her because when we found her there was only the nub.
