Fortaz
Hopefully this is the right spot for this. I have a question about the antibiotic Fortaz. Link to thread on my situation ( http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...-my-husbandry& )
I had been given Fortaz to give to my Burm for an apparent RI. (1.2cc every three days for a total of five injections) The vet told me to keep it frozen until ready to use. In my mind that would mean to store it in the freezer and then thaw it out to fill a syringe and then put it back in the freezer. That is what I did.
Afterwards when reading about the antibiotic online, several websites state that once thawed, it is not to be refrozen. The vet did not make mention of this.
My question is could I have rendered it ineffective by the repeated thawing/freezing?

I think if its left at room temp it doesn't last as long as in the freezer. I think its only a few days at room temp and about a month when frozen. I'm not a vet so I don't know if that is precise, but that is what my vet told me when I had to do a round of injections.
What I did though was prep a bunch of syringes all at once and leave those in the freezer so I only needed to take one out when I needed it. Convenient and it thaws much quicker.

Hmm... It was never out of the freezer for more than enough time to thaw and fill a syringe, so maybe it was fine. I will ask the new vet when we come up with a treatment plan.
Blood work came out fine, still waiting to hear about the culture and sensitivity. He said the biggest tube they had was not long enough to reach his air sacs so they may not grow anything from the culture. He also said if we do further diagnostics he would want to sedate him, as he strongly dislikes being restrained in any way. Four people holding him was nearly a battle lost. He has not shown any signs of aggression, just wants to escape.

It will be fine.
FWIW, I've been now fighting RIs with nebulized F10SC. I did a write up on it a while back. It works quicker than anything I've ever used - antibiotics included.
I'm not advocating stopping your antibiotic therapy. But augmenting it with nebullized F10SC would not hurt.
I've been getting my F10 from England from a vendor on ebay. He was reliable and shipped fairly quickly.

Re: Fortaz
Thanks. The vet also mentioned nebulization as an option. I've tried the method with the fogger, very briefly. I can imagine I much better effect using an actual nebulizer.
