Red Heat Bulbs?

I was just wondering, are the Pythons able to see the red light coming from the light, or is it just a source of heat to them?

The light is dark enough that it feels like nighttime for them. I have 2 lamps and I only use red bulbs.

Hi, so ball pythons can "see" colors blue to about yellow. They cannot see red. However, they can sense the warmth of the red heating lamps with their heat pits since those pick up infrared.

Isn't that why reptiles' eyes glow red in nighttime photographs instead of green like a cat's?

Hello, I was using the Red Night time bulbs but a local reptile store owner had me try a "moonlight" bulb. I actually like it a lot and my ball Python seems to be more active then it was with the red bulb. It might just be me but that's what I feel

I used the moonlight bulbs too, and I like them better than the red bulbs especially since the tank was in my bedroom so a piercing red light compared to mellow moonlight bulb is a big difference.

I use a low purple bulb myself for my BP but a red for my Beardie, I prefer the purple because it isn't as abrasive at night to the eyes, but both bulbs have the exact same heat output so I think it's just an aesthetic thing really.

However, I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on just switching the lights for ceramic heat completely. Seeing as how BP's require no actual light to be comfy and the room gets plenty of light during the normal day/night cycle from the sunlight.

I don't use bulbs at all unless i want light with the heat, like with a daytime basking species. CHEs are cheaper in the long run because they last practically forever, and the debate about a particular reptile being able to see whatever color of light becomes beside the point. If you want a light to see your snake, use a florescent or LED. Just me and my opinion, of course.

That's sort of how my train of thought went as well. i'd like to just switch him to ceramic for his heat and then just run an LED strip that I can use for lighting when I want it. But the natural light cycle that the room gets has been completely adequate so far.
