Ultimately price is determined by the buyer, not the seller, based on supply and demand. The only breeders shooting themselves in the foot are the ones breeding for quantity over quality.

I have to completely agree with this.
And, say perhaps I worded the opening post poorly. As I was thinking of some hobbyist/breeders following the "females are more valuable" adage without a lot of thought in it. And, then those same breeders being the most likely to be starting the threads about the "bottom falling out of the market" for whichever gene.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is.... Males as a gender are sold for more almost always but males of a particular morph when compared to their female counterpart may or may not be priced higher depending on the current state of the market.
    Very well explained.

I think males are cheaper because they are replaced much more easily. Let's say you have a banana male and you breed him to some female and get a banana combo male. Are you going to keep using that original banana male? Probably not, because you have a combo now to work with. The original then goes onto the market. As more and more people ditch their less powerful males, their price goes down.

Theoretically, with every generation you can breed a better and better male, so you'd have no use for the male before it, as pairing the earlier male would be a poor choice of action when you have a better powerhouse. With females, you're not "losing" anything by breeding them. They are going to keep their value because the new powerhouse male can breed to them.

The only thing that can really negate this is that older males can breed more females than younger males.

This is a fun comment to read, as it helps to provide insight to my current 'method'. When investing in a project, I tend to pick up a few females that I am interested in, and then after a year or two, I buy a powerhouse male to raise for them. So three moderately priced females, and one expensive male is the current way I've been going, and it sounds like this supports that.
