Snakes and spiders go together?

For all you guys/gals into T's just kind of wondering why or what the connection is between keeping snakes and spiders.
I love my snakes,every kind as long as I can remember. But spiders? Not my cup of tea. You go to reptile conventions and there are always spiders there. I just don't get the connection, I'd love to hear what my fellow herpers that also dig spiders have to say.

Low maintenance, strange and unusual(to the layman, of course), fascinating food consumption habits, both generally considered 'exotic' pets. I bought my first tarantula in the 80s from my friendly neighborhood reptile shop. They've been showcased hand in hand for quite a while.

I have always been terrified of spiders. Since getting my snake however, I have been looking at tarantulas and have considered getting one. I have a fear but am also very interested in them! The fact that I don't have to handle them does make them more desireable, but the way they move and eat is fascinating!

I blame Mike. My daughter used to be scared of house spiders (now she saves them on the playground from other kids, lol). But she started showing interest in T's, and getting interested in the tarantula thread on here. Dad took alot more convincing than I did, and before long we had an A. Versicolor sling (I think the versi ' s are pretty). Not too long after that, a Green Bottle Blue made its way home too....

They are so interesting to watch. And crazy little guys when it comes to food. Our GBB has made an awesome web in her enclosure. We don't hold ours, they are just look at pets. I love watching them, they are fun.

I don't think there's anything to "get"....any more than we try to understand why someone who collects turtles might not be interested in collecting snakes, for instance. But we all enjoy hanging out with fellow herpers. While invertebrates are not "herps", they are very similar in that they are exotic, feared and misunderstood, easily kept as pets, come in an amazing variety of species, sizes, and colors, and are flat-out as fascinating as they are alien. All those similarities make them a perfect fit in our herping society...they only lack an internal skeleton, after all.

Makes since, they are both kind of a fringe pet. I just notice so many of my friends that also keep snakes keep spiders. I just never had the fascination for them that I do reptiles in general. Could be the whole camel spider thing while in Iraq :p

LOL...could be. I used to be very scared of spiders, but after much exposure through herping events and friends, I've gotten over that fear. I still get creeped out by the feel of bug legs on my skin, but I have to say...the more I see them, read about them, and watch them in real life, the more fascinated I am by invertebrates of all sorts. Still don't have much interest in keeping any myself, but I completely understand the feelings of others who keep them.
