Re: Does anybody dislike feeding videos?

After 20+ years of keeping reptiles I've seen everything from gaboons eating rabbits to cribos eating bp's and everything in between in person. To be honest I find feeding videos about as interesting as watching the dog eat kibble now lol.

Re: Does anybody dislike feeding videos?

Here is a bit of a different tilt to this. I've already chimed in on liking to watch them but being still quite new it is safe to say the "newness" hasn't worn off. With the holidays behind us my son and I had the chance to introduce many in our family to our bp. We talked about the feeding (f/t) and where we get our rats and even how they are dispatched and cared for. Typically, the non snake folks just say "oh thats gross". After handling the snake, talking about the feeding process, talking about how amazing it is that this animal has evolved to eat once a week (in my house), get everything from one meal, and to eat something so large compared to its head, etc. Its not gross at all. It is fascinating and when the feeding display if you will is used for education you end up going from "oh that is gross" to "oh that is amazing".

    Anyway....just another angle.

its actually quite clean, compared to the table manners of a cat

i once watched a cat eat a mouse right next to me.... the sounds alone are quite nasty, the way they crush the skull and the bones. they eat everything, except for the fur and the intestines, so in the end you are left with a small pile of bloody intestine and a piece of fur.

by comparison, the way snakes feed is really clean.

but it still does nothing for me.

No cats eat everything. They leave nithing behind. Fur is needed for digestion. Its about the same as a snake except cats crunch the bones.
1 Husband, 1 Western Hognose Snake (male), 2 ferrets (2 females), 1 male jungle leopard gecko, 4 gerbils (2 females & 2 males), 1 male dwarf rabbit, 3 guinea pigs (1 male, 1 female and 1 female skinny pig), 2 American parakeets, 2 cats (male bobcat hybrid and a male Egyptian Mau mix), and 2 dogs (female Mini Dachshund and a female Alaskan Malamute).

Kind of in the same boat, except just a hair under 20 years keeping and I probably haven't seen as much neat stuff. It's not that I don't like feeding vids, just have plenty of my own to watch, at least when they'll let me.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

Re: Does anybody dislike feeding videos?

I'm indifferent as long as it wasn't done in malicious intent. I.E people feeding off an animal on purpose for fun or saying how 'bad ass destroying that dumb nasty rat was' and BS like that.

Both the snake and feeder should be respected. I respect the beauty, tact, and some times savagery a predator has when killing its prey. Its fascinating to witness. And I also respect the feeder who gives its life to keep my predators happy and healthy animals.

With that said, I do have feeding videos of my ferrets killing live mice, rats, chicken, and ducks. The technique they use is rather interesting, but common. They strive to grab their prey by the back of the neck to snap and break. Its quite interesting to watch them. Sometimes they pack together to down a prey. Sometimes the group watches as one individual makes the kill.

I don't make or watch videos to see a prey die. I make and watch these feeding videos to witness the amazing physical and mental abilities of these predators.

I get tired of feeding videos. After so many years of feeding reptiles the novelty wears off. It is dissappointing when I'm trying to learn about a species that is new (to me) and all I can find are video clips of it swallowing some prey items. I'd much rather see general handling, how the animal hooks, or just have some keeper talk about advanced husbandry or any issues they have had keeping the species. I do watch my own snake eat very carefully however and I consider it a part of his visual health check- it's a good way to see the inside of his mouth without stressing him.

Reading all the comments made me think why i dont really like feeding videos. While some are for educational purposes ive seen too many videos made for the "cool" factor. I guess it bothers me how some people treat feeders. And some videos are kinda brutal. Watching a tegu kill and eat a rat was something else. I get it that they need to eat but just feels weird watching it.
