Wow. That is impressive.
I would guess the lack of heat while he was digesting has something to do with it. Taking him to the vet is definitely the right call.
Good luck with him. Getting him to 18 years is damn impressive in my book. Hopefully this is nothing major and you can get him back on track fairly quickly.
