    Which habitat is best?

What is the best initial habitat for a baby BP? The store staff suggested a bearded dragon habitat, which has me confused. Isn't a 100W bulb too hot for a bp?

They also have the snake habitat:

Oliver is in a 20 gallon tank now, so I figured it would be best to get him the same size and set up. It would seem less stressful to me to have familiar surroundings when coming to a new home..... right? There is a 40 gallon kit available but I don't want to overwhelm Oliver with a home twice as big as the one he now has. What do you think?

I live in a rural area and do not have any reptile stores near me (that I know of) .....

    Thannksssss,
    P.

What size is your BP? A lot of stuff that comes in those kits you wont use. what is your setup like now?

A 100watt bulbs seems okay. depends on where you live and what the weather is like most of the time.

I have nothing now.....not even the snake! I'm getting prepared, and want the best set up for him. I'd say he's about 15" long....

You could use a 40gl tank that way you wont have to upgrade later. The hardest part about a glass cage is keeping temps and humidity correct (you have to check the cage everyday to make sure everything is okay) or you could use a rubbermade tote as a cage and its much easier to keep temps and humidity.

From the reading that I've done, I thought that getting him a larger tank would make him too stressed? I'd love to have to buy only one tank if it's ok for the snake :-)

you can buy a tank that will house an adult and just clutter it up. They feel insecure if there isn't enough places to hide or its too open. IMO bulbs just deplete humidity. I would seriously look into a plastic enclosure, they maintain heat and humidity a lot better than a glass tank will. Some examples to look at would be Vision Cages and Animal Plastics T8, there are plenty of users on here than can vouch for the Animal Plastics cages, I myself use visions, but that is because I can get them locally and don't have to pay for shipping.

Note: to get an idea of how to properly set up a plastic enclosure there is a really nice write up on here that should answer all your questions (I believe it was done by "The Serpent Merchant". I can't find the link right now, but you should be able to search for it

Just fill it up with things and he will be fine... now trying to heat and keep humidity in a 40gl can be a job. I have a 40gl glass cage and its a everyday thing to check.

    Re: Which habitat is best?

I'm going to give you the same advice a friend who has had snakes for many years gave me when I started out. Like an idiot I didn't listen to him, and as a result I wasted a lot of money, got very aggravated, eventually took his advice, and now I have empty tanks cluttering up the house.

Get a tub/rack system, either buy it or build it if you have the tools available. At some point you'll want more BP's - they're like Pringles - and long-term it's cheaper and easier, plus you will have happer and healthier BP's - if they're in tubs.
