Pairing Dilemma...

I bought a female that was supposed to be gravid. She was bred to a fire. However, she never laid for me so I assumed that she was never gravid and would take the season off. Well, she shed a couple of weeks ago and appeared to be glowing. I kind of scratched my head and thought that maybe she would go ahead and ovulate for a late/early clutch (however you choose to see it). However, while I was vending at the show, another breeder and I were talking and he thought that I should go ahead and pair her now instead of waiting until January to give her a chance to ovulate. He said I should keep those follicles developing by pairing her. I like the male she was bred to and I would love babies from him. So...do I go ahead and start pairing her and risk the second male being the father? Or do I still hold off for an ovulation? I'm not really sure how to proceed with this.

If you don't pair and she is not gravid, it is a wasted season. Go ahead and pair her. Better to get eggs than take a chance and get nothing.

That's pretty much what he said. The problem is that we're trying to prove her as a vanilla and I don't have any fires that are breeding age. My firefly is only 200g. I suppose I could always try her with the firefly next year.

im in the same boat man, ive got a female i picked up that was (supposedly) paired with a pastel lesser male recently. the guy i got her from "said" he saw a lock, but i wasnt there so i guess ill have to wait and see.

i would not rely on a possible sperm retention if you have a different nice male ready. it would really suck if the follicles get re-absorbed or when you get a clutch of slugs.

you dont know if sperm has been retained or not, not for sure anyway. better do the pairing, and you might still get lucky and get a multi-sire clutch.

I would honestly pair that female since it's probably only the beginning of her season. With mine, she was bred with a fire LAST season...she just never laid.

Both of my breeders this season are new breeders. One I have been pairing for nearly a month now and he's still not locking (he's got plugs and is 700g). This other one is 700g or so and producing plugs but I've never introduced him to a female. He would be the one I would throw in with her.

I'll see about pairing them this week after they digest (today is feeding day!) and see what happens.

Like everyone else said, I would pair her to something and at least have a better chance of something being hatched instead of nothing.

Well. Sadly I don't have any males that are producing at this point. So the way I'm looking at it. If she lays. Then she lays. If not. I'll have a beast sized breeder next year
