Being that we all participate in such a misunderstood hobby (regardless of the species), it feels especially hurtful to hear such contention from one of our own.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend's snake- that can be so frustrating to watch. Unfortunately, neglect, mistreatment, and abuse happen with all types of animals. Thousands of goldfish are living in small, unfiltered bowls. High energy dogs like huskies are bought with the expectation that they will stand living in an apartment with a ten minute romp a day, and then get sent to the shelter for acting out. Show horses get sold for meat as soon as an injury renders them unable to perform at the level desired. But not all fish, dog, or horse owners do that. Some, like yourself, really do feel for the animal. Should you hate all huskies? No, just don't get one if it doesn't fit your lifestyle.
We all want the best for our animals here. The misinformed are educated, and the willfully ignorant are sassed (I believe you got a taste of that yourself). The unethical breeders are called out and warned against consistently. They exist, but hopefully not for long.
Instead of raging against the industry, do what you can to change it for the better. Fight the uphill battle because the animals are worth it- even the "pet rocks." You're welcome to post your concerns about mistreatment, or ask for advice to approach your friend about a suffering animal. It may be too late for that individual snake, but someone here is always happy to vent their frustrations with you. Be kind, and be treated kindly in return.
Welcome to the forums!
Excellent post! And so very true!!
Especially the husky part. I am in no means a snake expert... but my friend and I got our hatchling balls, same day, same vendor. She told me she was highly knowledgeable because her brother kept them for many years.
I listened to her, got a lot of the wrong stuff. (Don't worry it was fixed within days).
Any how... after a month hers passed away and she couldn't understand why???
All she had was a heating pad on a 10 gal tank. With reptile carpet. She ran her ac constantly. She refused to do it any differently, claiming "all they need is the pad to stay warm". She had one hide and it was open on two sides cuz she wanted to "see" him. Did not have a thermometer let alone a hygrometer.
Her reason for it passing was... it must have been sick when I got it.
