I keep all my ball pythons in racks, but I am curious why you don't like glass tanks? Is it the issue if maintaining humidity? I know that can be a problem. I will definitely plan on upgrading to a larger size when it is needed. I just like learning other people's thoughts! What do you use for your other snakes?

How long do you think it will take him to get up to adult size?
Quite awhile. And please do not overfeed! Go small and slow with prey size - these are NOT ball pythons. Feed only one prey once every 7-10 days. Even brand new babies do well on this schedule. And choose a prey item that does not leave a noticeable lump. I start my babies off on mouse fuzzies.

I don't like tanks either. Partly because maintaining heat and humidity is a pain, but also because it is hard to provide privacy for your snake. But the biggest reason is this: Have you ever tried to put a nearly fully grown boa constrictor DOWN into a tank??? You will never try again. Front opening enclosures are a God-send for a snake that doesn't like to go back in. Just sayin'.....

I keep my smaller snakes in racks too but I can't imagine using big tanks for all my guys that need cages: one factor for me is the weight (we have melamine and PVC cages and though the melamine is heavy too it's not as heavy as those big glass tanks for me) and another is aesthetics. I just don't like the looks of the big tanks unless they're for fish and very much prefer the looks of stackable 4', 6', and 8' caging.

Thanks for the advice! I actually read that last night while I was researching. It suits me just fine to feed every 10 days! I am a vet student so I am not the richest person in the world ;-) although, that said, I'm lucky my friends are animal people as well and so I have people breeding rats and mice for me! I don't tend to powerfeed my balls either. I don't think it is the healthiest thing. But I will remember to feed smaller meals compared to the balls. I am in no hurry to have a 10 foot snake. This way it gives me time to plan and budget! Also thanks for your input on cages. Those were all valid points. I am sure I will be investing in a different enclosure down the track!

Putting my 8-1/4' female in that big tank is even a pain lol. Nearly 18lbs doesn't sound like much, and I lift 150-200lb pieces of steel all day at work but it's different to gently set something you care about, that doesn't want down, into an enclosure lol.
My 7ft anery girl is only 12lbs and it's def a pain to set her "down" into my big glass tank.
