Very sorry you have to go through this.

I agree with the others on this. Ask about payment plans, lower costs, or Care Credit - all worth looking into.

To answer your question directly, the best, safest, and most humane way to euthanize a reptile is having a vet put it down. Reptiles, and snakes in particular, have very slow metabolisms. This can make euthanasia tricky. It is best left to a vet with the experience and resources to end the snake's suffering quickly and effectively.

I hope you get some answers soon and can help your friend. I am truly sorry.

    Sad day..

I'm not sure if you'd be able to do this (I know I sure wouldn't) but the quickest and most humane method would be to destroy the brain. Is there a vet school or any university you might be able to bring him to? I know when I was in school, we had to pith bull frogs (I know, it's way different, but it's an option that may work), so they might be able to take care of that for no or minimal cost.

Yes, pithing is the quickest way and therefore very humane, but it is pretty violent. It would be humane if you can bring yourself to do it, but I know I couldn't.....

That seems like a high price for euth. I never had to do it for a snake but for my large dog it was only $120.
I agree with everything here and we also had to put our almost 12 year old pit bull down in February. She was such a good girl.

You are a GREAT owner for caring so much! Your snake had a good run and grew to be a big boy.

With the passing of your pet, there will be a time of sadness, but for me and hopefully others, I seem to eventually get the same feelings when new life comes about. We love our new pets and even though there is no forgetting the old ones, the care and love you put into the new ones helps heal.

I hope everything does or did turn out for the best.

I am sorry you and your animal are going through this.

$500 for euthanasia is absurd for any kind of animal.
Is there a nearby zoo you can contact? Even a local farmer with a captive bolt gun will work.

Instantaneous brain destruction is the only humane do-at-home method. Its potentially pretty gory.
