Parents and Snakes!

My mother was always petrified of snakes. I didn't get my first snake until I went to college. In the end it was well worth the wait, for sure. I did spend a lot of time trying to convince them to let me have one when I was younger, but it never worked out for me.

Sadly, when you live with the parental units, you play by their rules. If they allow you to get a snake just make sure that you care for it properly so that they never have to. The last thing you want is for them to use the snake you want so badly against you! Secure/proper caging is a must it looks like you're doing your research, so you're already on the right track.

Hopefully you can work something out with them so that you don't have to wait until you move out like I did!

I grew up with tons of animals, I was always bringing something home. I introduced reptiles to my parents at the age of 8 by bringing home a lizard and then later a garter snake. Ended up with 3 adult lizards, and at one point one female had 9 babies.
Babies found homes, and then my female escaped and I decided to give away my small reptile collection, after having kept them for about 5 years.
Fast forward a few years (to about 16 I think) and I decided to bring home a corn snake (which I kept in my closet for about a month before it was discovered). From then on it went down hill until I moved out when I was 19 (left the house with 2 geckos, 5 snakes). Been living on my own for 2.5 years and the collection has grown.
As long as you take care of your animals then it appears your parents don't have a problem

My parents were heavily against it. I made a professional report of the pros and cons of having snakes, the reasons I'd do well with them, and the facts about them. For example, they assumed all snakes have venom, they assumed everything with the word "Python" or "Boa" behind it got at least 8 feet long, and they assumed that snakes were aggressive. I reported and my mother shrugged and said "Sure, why not!"

Just remember, many snake species live 15-30 YEARS. If your parents take the "not while you're living under my roof" approach, respect their wishes. You'll have plenty of time to enjoy your pets once you are on your own and they don't have a reason to feel responsible for you or your decisions. My parents were always accepting or my hobby, but it wouldn't have been worth the domestic strife to disregard their wishes if they hadn't been.

I basically just told my mom last year that I would be getting a snake. She wasn't wild about it and told me she preferred I not. I was living in Africa at the time and thought I could do whatever I wanted, so literally the day after I got back I went out and got my first snake. My dad was pissed, but I chose to ignore it since he never actually came to me to tell me no. Fast forward to 3 months ago while I was away at school and I got 5 more, knowing that I'd be moving out quickly this summer. Well, again, my dad was pissed, but never actually came to me to tell me he was not happy about it.

But, my dad just spent the weekend helping me drill holes in tons of tubs and measuring and sawing pieces for my new rack with no complaints . My mom has gone with me to the store to buy more supplies, etc. They've accepted it and know that my animals are secure and kept in pristine conditions. I work with dangerous animals on a daily basis and this is my career path, so they know that I know what I am doing. My mom even gets excited to watch them eat hahah and she was a total trooper driving across the country with me and my 6 snakes . I definitely would not recommend going ahead like I did without your parents wishes, but I knew my parents would come around and they know I won't be here much longer.

But, it does sound like your parents have agreed, so go for it!!

My parents started out with a 'no way no snakes in this house' attitude so I moved out and bought Aradia... When I moved back in I brought him with me. Soon enough my dad had him out all the time and once he was showing me ball python videos I knew he was hooked. When we went to Repticon Denver in April he ended up with the stub-tailed normal (I bought her but she's definitely his snake). Now there's three in the house where before he was opposed. My mom is less thrilled, but mostly about the rats in the downstairs freezer

If you sat down with them and showed that your ready to take on the responsibility they would probably allow it. Parents do not want to be downers, we just know if you don't take care of it we will have to. So they may not allow you to but that's part of growing up. When you go out and have your own place and make your own big boy money you can do as you wish.

I just brought my first snake home one day and no one really cared. It certainly wasn't the worse thing ive come home with. Maybe thats the logic my family used hahaha
