If they were black specs and moving, they were probably mites. Go to Reptile Basics, LLLReptile, The Bean Farm, etc. and order a can of Prevent-A-Mite. Once that comes in, apply it per the directions and that should clear up your mite problem. In the mean time, go to a pet store and buy "Reptile Relief" spray and apply that to your snake. That should clear up your problem.

Also, I would clean the cage, the hides, the branches, the water bowel, etc. and put your snake on paper towel for now until you can get the mite problem cleared up. Then, once it's cleared, clean everything again and sanitize with something like F10 or Chlorhexadine (you can also buy that when you buy your PAM).

You should never spray PAM on a snake or put a snake in an enclosure where it's not completely dry.

X2 read the instructions, then read them again and follow exactly. PAM is extremely effective.

I got three snakes with mites from an online purchase. Not having PAM on hand but also not wanting to wait I used Reptile Spray from Petco. It worked awesome. Killed them on contact and is safe for the snakes. Worked for me in one treatment. Was fast and easy and I didn't have to wait.

Re: Mite on my Ball Python??

Black poppy seed looking things are reptile mites. Even if you don't see them, they could still be around. Eggs are microscopic and juvies are almost near invisible.

Sanitize your cage, cage items, and accessories with bleach and hot water. Put your snake on paper towel substrate and keep the set up simple ( hide and water dish)

Provent-a-Mite works wonders. And it should be a standard procedure to treat all new additions for mites, so its great to have PAM on hand.

In the mean time, soak your snake once a day for 15-30 minutes with a drop or two of dish soap.
