Record Digitizing?
I'm a indexer in a data entry facility for my daytime job. I thought I would try to carry that over into something I enjoy, the reptile hobby. I can turn any records into digital records, snakes, chameleons, rats, whatever you want that you have paper records for I can turn them into digital records. I take security and personal information VERY VERY SERIOUSLY. My brother is a Information Security specialist for a large company and has everything set up for me so that everyone's information is only seen by me. Information will not be sold, given, or traded. Once the information has been digitalized I will send you the file/files, and I can either keep a back up copy of your records on my secure back up system, or I can delete all records of yours so they will no longer be in my possesion. At this time right now I am mainly working out of Microsoft excel so it is accessible by almost everyone, I am looking for other alternatives for better functionality. Since this is something new that I have not seen on here before I am willing to do this for 1 maybe 2 people free of charge to see how it works out before charging. If it works out well and those people are happy with the results I can then do a price per page, or a monthly fee and you can send me as many documents a month.
Any input on this? Suggestions? Thoughts? Opinions? Feel free to give me good advice or cut me down. Just thinking about it and was thinking I may be able to help some others out.

I know about iHerp and a few others but not everyone has internet or is tech savvy... That's why I was wondering if there may be any market in there or anything of the nature. Or maybe someone has 100 pages of records they don't have time or want to take the time to put it all on iHerp... That's where I come in Still think there's no market or maybe worth a shot?

There is always a market, that is what competition is for! Personally I don't use iHerp as my collection is just not that big and only limited to snakes and one T. I found an app on the apple market called SnakeKeeper that suites my needs perfect. If you see a need, and a potential customer base, and it's something that you would enjoy putting together, I would say go for it. Don't get discouraged just because their is a similar product already out there.

It's worth a shot but doesn't sound like something you'd make money on. Imho

Reptile scan here. It is worth a try but I too am not sure it is a money maker, perhaps.

Pursue it as long as it holds your interest and who knows maybe you'll discover your market niche.
Regardless, the knowledge and experience you gain in the process are valuable and may lead you to your next venture.
(just my 2 cents)
Good luck.

Just registered on iHerp thanks to this thread. Awesome resource, but man do I wish they had an android app to go with it. It'd be awesome if you could label tubs with QR codes and scan them to bring up the records.

I've got too many snakes for that type of record keeping. I use a visual system so I can walk around my reptile room and look at the racks. I can tell you the last time every snake ate, when they shed, who is paired with who, how many eggs each female laid each year, etc. with just a glance around the room. If I was to enter all of that data into a program, then analyze it, it would take much more time. With the use of white boards, colored magnets, colored stickers, label maker and a few other tools, it takes me no time at all to record, observe and monitor our collection. I do keep electronic records in a spreadsheet of things I may need to refer back to in the future. That is mostly clutch records (who was paired with who, how many eggs, hatch date, morphs produced, etc.).
So for me, there would be no market for such a program. Good luck in your endeavor.

Just an FYI in case anyone's interested. It's fairly easy to set up QR codes with a direct link to your iHerp records. Just use a site like this: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ and plug in the address for each animal's page. I've started putting them on my tubs for easy tracking. QRDroid is a good reader and lets you put a scanner widget on your home screen for convenience.
