Where to get ball sexed?
Where can I go to get my ball reliably sexed? He (?) was purchased at a pet store and I was told it was male but want to find out for sure. I may someday wish to breed. There is a reptile expo this weekend that I plan to attend. Can I take him along and would someone there be willing to sex him? Is it viewed as okay to take your pet to these events? I don't want to offend anyone....

That shouldn't be a problem. Most venders there would be more than willing to sex it for you. Main thing is to wait for them to be available and not get between them and paying customers. As a whole they are very friendly and will help you with not just sexing but any other questions you may have. Good luck

You need to have your snake by an experienced keeper in your area. You can even find a local herp vet and they can usually sex the snake for you. If you want to take the animal to the show, you need to make sure they allow outside animals to be brought in. However, I would not recommend you take your animal to a show. You can pick up RIs, mites, etc. from there and transfer it to your snake.

Thank you. We are very excited about going to the expo and learning all we can. I think we will bring our guy along also. In following you advice, I will be sure to wait until they are free and availible!! Thanks again.

I completely agree and would never suggest taking your herp to a reptile show. The only RI that I have ever had to treat was from a healthy animal the was brought to a show and it picked up the RI there.

Re: Where to get ball sexed?
What if I keep my guy out in the car and only bring him in long enough to get sexed? If we do that and wash our hands really well and use sanitizer before handling him will he still get sick? Of course I dont want him to get sick.....

1. I wouldn't recommend leaving your snake in the car unless someone is there with the snake and can alter the temp in the car to keep it optimum.
2. sometimes, disease can't be prevented by simple handwashing. Like for mites, they can jump onto your clothes and then onto your snake. Handwashing won't stop that.
Ultimately it's up to you whether or not you bring the snake (assuming the expo will even allow outside animals) to the expo. Honestly, I would take your snake to a vet to have it sexed, find someone close to you to show you, or have someone at the expo show you so you can turn around and sex your snake. If it were me, I wouldn't bring my snake anywhere near an expo, but that's just me.

Re: Where to get ball sexed?
Okay, I will try to get someone to show me how to try to sex him. The closest reptile vet charges a new patient charge just to get into see him.Would not think twice about it if my guy gets sick but hate to pay it just to have a second opinoin. Unfortunately I do not know anyone else with snakes near me.......Im kind of the odd duck around here I guess. I will keep Watson home safe and sound.

Re: Where to get ball sexed?
Wow, I wasn't trying to give you bad advice. Obviously everyone else disagrees with me. I personally have never had a bad experience at a show. I have heard stories of people having bad experiences. By all means listen to the majority. I don't claim to be an expert or anything close. I was just trying to save you a $80-$90 vet bill. If your not in a hurry to breed, definitely find someone who will show you how to sex your snake. Its not rocket science, and is relatively easy. Good luck

Yeah, most shows don't allow outside animals in. Being a vendor I would not be happy about people bringing in their animals, some vendors have animals in poor health and that's bad enough.
I usually tell people to check out the regional section of our forum and find someone in their area.
