His tongue is actually much wider that that picture shows. But they flick it a lot "tasting" the air. That pic is mid flick so its curled and looks a bit funny. When they are being defensive / aggressive they will open theor mouth and spread out their tongue wide. Like a "don't mess with me" thing.
