Need opinions!!! I'm thinking he isn't a he...

So I bought this guy in October so I could have another breeder male for this season. I started pairing him up in November, I put him in with a pastel male and a mojave male at different times with a female to try and entice him into breeding. I had absolutely no luck getting him to lock up with a female. I thought it was because he was pretty fat for a male, 1,600 grams so I didn't worry about him not eating. Then tonight I started questioning his sex...

Here he was back in October, I didn't pay much for him, he was an "unproven" breeder male. I couldn't pop him as male, but I'm not that good at popping adults and since I didn't pay much for him I really didn't think I would have to worry about him being a female.

And tonight, when I opened his tub to see he wasn't breeding, as usual. I was really frustrated with him, then noticed his head glow...

Checked him over, noticed his belly

Looks pretty weird for a snake that hasn't ate since October

What I believe is a tail suck, if this is an ovy starting/ending it's pretty funny because that would mean my first ovy of the year was from my male breeder....

Looks kinda like an ovy. Can you palpate for follicles or maybe get him/her probed?

It looks like you have a 1600 gram female on your hands! I do live in Iowa if you need Probs or Probing.

WOW! Looks like a glowing female to me! That difference in head is too different to ignore. Perhaps the pastel or the mojave may have knocked up your "male".

Oh man, I forgot to add this picture (ignore the spikey couch-trying to keep the Dobie off the top of the couch)

That's exactly what I was thinking, first I thought eggs, but the tail suck makes me think the start or end of an ovy since it's not huge. I'm not great at palpating so I couldn't say much about that.

I'm so glad you agree. I thought maybe it could be wishful thinking, but I think his "condition" is pretty obvious. I've never been taught how to probe so I've never tried. What part of Iowa are you in? I'm SE, by Iowa City. I have a couple breeder friends that could check him out too, but I'm thinking I may not put "him" through the stress right now. It's going to be so hard to start calling him a her!

Yeah for sure! I couldn't believe his head glow when I opened the tub. My husband didn't even recognize him when I took him out for pictures. I'm going to guess the pastel knocked "him" up because he's a beast when it comes to breeding. Man, it would be so crazy to get pewters when I wasn't even breeding for them!

I think he is beautiful! The dark head is amazing. Be an awesome gift if he turned into a she for breeding. Never go wrong with too many girls.

Totally looks like start/end of an ovy. That tail suck is a very tell-tale sign. How lucky are you! Usually it happens the other way Haha. GL and hope to see eggs for you soon.

That would be killer! Talk about an awesome gift! I thought my male was a female for a bit because I couldn't pop him as a him. I wasn't getting hemipenes or perm plugs or anything. Yet...he's been seen locked up with TWO known females. At least you get a gravid female instead of a male rather than a male that was supposed to be female.

    Good luck on pewters!

He/she is super pretty! I haven't seen many cinnys this dark. I couldn't agree more, definitely won't be upset if he is a she!

The tail suck was what really got me thinking this cannot be a male! I can't believe how lucky I am either, I never get this lucky with snakes! Definitely explains why he wasn't a proven breeder!!! I was leery when they told me that, I almost passed up on the deal, thank heavens I didn't!

No doubt! I've been suspicious about one other male, but he ended up locking with females after a few months. I didn't even question the sex of this guy until last night. You sure wouldn't think people would mistake the sex of a giant cinny! I picked him/her up from Tinley from a breeder that should have known. I'm wondering if someone miss-marked him/her, or she probed as a he, which can happen. You can't really mess up popping males, especially when they are young. Sometimes females will end up being male because they weren't popped hard enough or correctly. Getting a male that is actually female doesn't happen often!
