Heat and humidity are breeding grounds for bacteria which can lead to respiratory issues. The holes are for airflow. What you are shooting for is good air exchange to help prevent the growth of bacteria. Start with few holes and run it until your heat and humidity level out and stay a constant. Then check the air flow by removing the water dish. What you want to see is the humidity in the tub drop to the same humidity the room is in under an hour. For a 15 qt tub I like to see it in 20 minutes or less but I'm happy if its under an hour for my 41 qt tubs. I had an issue with RI's a while back and poor air circulation seemed to be the cause. Another member explained this to me and once I got my air circulation corrected the battle was over in a jiffy. Until then I had vet visit after vet visit. Hope that helps and congrats on your new addition. Please post pics when you get it.
