    Live rats only

Well I built another rack for my rats and somehow left two fuzzies alone in a tub and they died from the cold I guess. They must have been under the bedding and we missed them. Well that bummed me out but I decided not to let them go to waist and tried to feed them to a couple younger snakes. They wouldn't eat them because they wouldn't move. I held one by the tail and moved along the top of the tub and my snake struck but missed twice and bumped his head on the tub. When I layed one in the tub they just smelled it and waited for it to move but would not strike. I guess this is normal behavior for live feeders. Maybe I should get some feeding tongs.

I'm sure this isn't the case with you, but I've had rats die that I get from the pet store before I give them to my snakes. It's happened twice in the past 4 years, but I never try to feed them after the die just incase they were sick.

This is what I have a monitor for. Garbage disposals with stomachs of steal. Nothing goes to waste in my house.

I bet a snake would have taken it if you hit those little rats with a hair dryer. Snakes don't like cold food.

How long were they dead? Unless the room you keep them in is freezing, they probably had already been decomposing a little bit before you tried to feed them. Maybe your snakes didn't want them because they were rotten. I'd just throw them out instead of risking a regurg because of bad food.

I wouldn't have tried to fed them. You don't know what they died from, or how long they had been dead.

Its not like that, I keep them in the garage with heat lamps my son and I had handled these babies a few hours before. We stayed up late building the new rack and when we transfered the mommas with babies they got left alone in the confusion. It was pretty cold in the garage and they died from hypo thermia I would not have tried feeding them off if I didn't think it was safe. I've thrown runts away before that died and I wasn't sure if it was safe. I warmed them under a heat lamp for a few minutes but the snakes I was feeding to had eaten the day before so they weren't real hungry evidently.

If the snake struck and missed (and it wasn't defensive), then the prey most likely wasn't warm enough. You should absolutely have feeding tongs - helps minimize the confusion from your hand's heat signature and the prey's.

Same reason I have a red tail. Fresh, frozen, rat, mouse, she doesn't care. Hubby even fed her once when she was deep in blue (knows better now), she never misses a chance to eat.
