I am saddened by the fact they put ALL of those reptiles down. I believe they should of all had a chance. I have worked in similar situations to this, with snakes and reptiles all illy treated - some not having water for weeks, RI infections, protected animals taken form the wild, other dying of starvation, severe burns, etc. But I didn't put them down. No, I spent time and addressed all their health issues to the best of my ability.
I just wished that the government reached out to the herpetology community more. I'm sure people would of taken some of them. I know I would of volunteered and stuck them somewhere far in the house for quarantine. The problem is that NO ONE in that county team probably had ANY experience with reptiles. I just hope they at least had good intent through their core.
At least those poor animals are out of their misery in the great cloud in the sky, where their are hides galore for the ball ptyhons and adventures for them all (with lots of food and water).
In fact, to remember the animals, I have decided to name my new reptile Love, and one feeder rat is now going to live its life in peace from my live feeders with a big ten gallon.
About PETA, I agree that it is a double edge sword. I'm glad that it has been addressed, but PETA is NUTS!!! And the lady who runs it doesn't even qualify as nuts, for she is worse than that. They have a higher kill rate than nearly all animal controls, and they attack children. I've seen it. In the FFA, I remember PETA people making a toddler cry for showing its rabbit. They are a big money sucker and do nearly nothing in return for the animals. There was a documentary I watched about them a long time ago, and I remember it, but I don't remember the name of the documentary exactly. However, I cleary remember the booklets given to children saying, "Your Mommy Kills" with the cover picture of a mother knifing a rabbit. Another scene with the main lady saying animals should be free. Something about a campaign saying beer over milk. And tons of other crazy stuff.
For FFA/4-H/etc, they have a whole course about dealing with the PETA people, that you have to take in order to be allowed to show in the state fairs, because they can be that vicious, specifically with the youth.
