well went in my bp tub to clean i use paper and notice she has loose runny stool so i put some gloves on to clean it up and noticed a 4 inch flat white worm ie tape worm not hard to tell well anyway this is a snake i got from a breeder breeder normal not sure if she was wild caught ive always looked at my pythons fecals to see how things are this is the first time with runny poop and worm i would take it to a vet but i just spent 1200 on my horse which severly colicked on me a couple of weeks ago and wondering can anyone help out with something over the counter or remedy that would get rid of this i apreciate everyones help thanks in advance

I would call your vet and tell them what's going on. They might be able to just sell you the meds without an office visit. You can deworming meds as I'm sure you know with having a horse.

I don't know if it's a state or federal law, but here in Indiana, it's illegal to prescribe medication if we haven't seen the pet in over a year. Has to do with having a "client-doctor" relationship.

A flat white worm could be any number of worms,; tapes are just one of many it could be. Roundworm and pinworm are two possibilities that immediately come to mind, and not all dewormers treat all worms. The vet will also need an exact weight (in grams) to calculate the proper dose. I would be extremely suspicious of a vet who recommended using something over the counter without diagnosing the correct parasite. A vet who would do that would make me think they don't really know anything about snakes and could possibly tell you to use something that could kill your snake.

At our clinic, a fecal only costs $15 for a flotation and smear (you could probably ask them to just do a float if you have a larger sample, at least a teaspoon size or so), and exotic exam costs about $50. Medication charge will be dependent on the type of med, but if it happens to be a worm that can be treated with something OTC like Panacur, let them know and they'll just tell you the dose to use.

Go to the vet.

If you're refusing to go to the vet right now then weigh the value of the animal (monetary or otherwise) against the cost of a vet visit, fecal, and meds - 50-70 for the exam, 15-25 for the fecal, 10-25 for the meds. Animals in the wild live with worms all the time but it may be reducing the overall health and will definitely reduce the growth rate of your snake.

I understand about high vet costs. For what you're talking about I know my vet bill would be close to $300.

If you are willing to drive away from your area you may be able to find lower rates. Make some phone calls and ask for the prices before you commit.

I didnt even know panacur was an option for snakes I knew it was good for cats dogs horses but not snakes what kind of dosing would be used on snakes

I had a snake with parasites. My visit was 45, 15 for the float, and 20 for the medicine. So your only looking at 100-140$ visit.
