Best substrate for breeding tubs?

I use carpet in all my tubs. I have lots of extras and just throw them in a bucket when soiled. When I get a whole load, I throw them in the washing machine with bleach. Easy as pie and cheaper than non reusable substrate.

I like the recyclable aspect! But my husband has a thing about Bad Smells in the house. It's the main reason I'm not allowed to have a cat, he can't stand kitty litter smell. And I bet that used carpet bucket is RIPE.
