Actually I took a semester of Japanese in 6th grade and I thoroughly enjoyed it and was learning pretty quick, I've just pretty much forgotten everything.

My first-ever Japanese phrase that I learned was "betsu ni". I know words and a few phrases, but only from watching subbed anime. I always say I'm gonna try and learn Japanese but then I remember how damn hard it is and I give up. I couldn't even pass Spanish in school. xD

Betsu ni roughly means "It's nothing."

I would be doomed if I ever went to Japan, since the only phrase that I know is "Anta baka?". In my case, the answer is always yes.

Nah not doomed. Everyone is really nice and they try their best to speak English or grab someone who does know.

The #1 Japanese phrase that saved me several times:

    "sumimasen, eigo o hanashimasu ka?"
Excuse me, do you speak English?

I dunno, I always feel like if you're visiting a country, you should try to speak the native language. I haven't learned any foreign languages yet, and I have a lot of respect for multilinguals.

Yup. It was my favorite thing to say, especially when I was trying to be sarcastic. It just works so nicely with that tone of voice.
