I win! In the future I will get a BP! :)

I've been showing my husband the pictures of all your beautiful snakes, and telling him how much I want a BP. I love my rosies, but I greatly miss the BP I had so many years ago, and would like another. (More snakes the merrier!) He had it in his head that a BP is a big constrictor, so I had to set the record straight, tell him they only max out at around 4 or 5 feet, maybe an exception 6 feet. Then he was worried it could still do serious damage, so I had to tell him they aren't aggressive snakes, and I've never heard of anyone being injured by one. Told him the only time I ever had a problem with my BP was when *I* made the mistake of sticking my hand in his cage when it was feeding time (food was already present). My fault, not the snakes, and that snake let go faster than you could say "serendipity" when he realized it was NOT prey he was latched on to. He still wasn't convinced.

So I just kept dropping hints. "Look at this snake! Its so pretty! I want a ball python."

Finally he said, "I'll tell you what..." and a deal was made. Once he has a regular job (he just got out of the active army, and though he's still in national guard he won't get a regular paycheck from that, needs a civilian job for the in between times) we can look at getting a BP. I added to that, after the house is done being painted and completely put away. (We've been in this house 2.5 years, and half of the rooms are painted, but we still have boxes that need to be unpacked. Most of those we are waiting until the rooms are painted, so we can put everything away without have to move it later to paint.) Done deal.

Now I just need to read up and update my knowledge. The snake I had did well, but what I've read already there are some things I did/was told to do then that are no longer recommended. Any one recommend any good books too? I like having books on hand as a quick reference and to read when I'm away from a computer.

Guess I need to start deciding what morph I like best too! There are so many choices!

I intend to pair a male pastel with a female hypo this winter, and if you are interested I would be willing to give you a normal 50% het hypo if I get any. Call it a military discount. I could also throw in a heating pad (I have a few) if you would like, so that all that you would have too pay for would be shipping the snake and a 20L aquarium or some other sort of enclosure and hides (since you already have substrate for the rosys). ood job getting him to agree to it!

That's so very kind of you, thank you! Keep me updated, I'll keep in touch and we'll see what happens.
I'm still learning about the different morphs, what does a het hypo look like?

I'm still learning about the different morphs and how they look. Off the top of my head, the ones I've seen labeled "bumble bee" and "killer bee" I really like. There are some others I've seen that are whitish/gray and black and others that are kind of mocha colored and patterned (don't know the names of those). I also like the pinstripe pattern, and pied depending on how much white they have (I like the ones that are no more than 50% white, so there's still a good amount of pattern showing). There's another one I've seen that had no pattern, some with stripes down the back, and one I think is called a "superblast"? There's just so many different ones out there, I can't even keep track of them! My husband would probably have a heart attack if I asked for one of the more expensive morphs too.

I want to start looking at the genetics behind these morphs, and what each gene involved actually does. That would help me understand what each name actually stands for. Genetics is something that interests me greatly, and I've done quite a bit of research into the genetics of some other species.

    See you in a week

My advice is to start a list! Also, check out www.kingsnake.com and www.faunaclassifieds.com use the search feature (Have to sign up to fauna, free) and look for the morphs on your list to get a general guideline of price. Prices change year to year but that will give you an idea anyways!

    Yay for you!

Be very careful, they are CRAZY addicting...

I thought I would throw out a little update, but didn't think it warranted a whole new thread...

I've been lurking more than posting (at least in regards to snakes...), just trying to learn all I can, and I'll admit, I am overwhelmed!!! I'm trying to start out with the basics... the base morphs, and attempt to learn the genes and what they do.

So having said that, I was showing my husband some pictures. Seems he isn't just going to let me get a ball python, he might be wanting one (or a couple dozen...) of his own!!!!
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.
