Mites

I have a collection of 20 balls and have gotten mites. I have tried provent a mite and soaking them as much as possible. I have done some reading and some people say the use of a pest strip is highly effective. My question is what effect will this have on the snakes? Im getting desperate and willting to try it if the risks are not to high. The snakes are in rubbermaid tubs and sit on two different rack systems in my bedroom closet which is about 10'x5' . Could I throw the no pest strip in the entry of the closet for a night or will 10that effect me also? or should I do it as it says in http://www.smuggled.com/MitTre1.htm ? All the help is greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you for looking.

When you soak them are you putting a drop of dawn dish soap in the water? How long have you had mites? It takes some time to kill them all.

What substrate are you using?

What all do you have in the tubs?

I have not used dawn. I have very little aspen horse bedding in the tubs treated with PAM and a small tub for water. I have had them about a month to a month and a half. I think it was lll reptiles that had a mite thing up that I followed and have not had success with yet and its very frustrating. Does it need to be dawn or can I use some other soap? I also read about a betadine mixture with water working and have bought some of that. I am thinking of soaking them in that tonight. I am just looking for the best means to fix this.

Id suggest switching them to paper towels until the mites are gone

Soak them in slightly warm water with a few drops of dawn like the person above mentioned. While they are soaking clean out their bin. Use paper towels as bedding until you get rid of those little buggers. Dry your snake off and oil him up with Lice MD (purchased from Wal-Mart). The lice MD will basically suffocate the mites and they will fall off which you will see them since your snake is now on white paper towels. This worked great for me and more importantly never harmed my snakes.

Ok. Should I also use PAM on the paper towels? Also I see that the mites have crawled out of the air holes in places as I drilled holes in the rubbermaid tubs they are in. I think they may be breeding out of the tubs. What would be the best thing for this?

Wipe down the entire rack inside and out. I probably would wipe it down with clorox disinfected wipes.

The only place your PAM should be is in your pantry. If your going to treat you bedding use prevent o mite. I personally would srart using newspaper. It's cheaper and cleaner. Do not spray your paper towel. Don't forget to clean your water dishes
