seriously?!!
OK so we bought our 5th and 6th BP today at the Atlanta show!!!! We got a male lesser and a male Mojave! I also lucked out and got a probe kit for cheap! Well our plan was to breed our Mojave and spider to our pastel but so far our spider wasnt getting the job done and we thought maybe he wasn't ready. The mojave of course will be in qt for a while. So I get home today to probe all of our BP and quickly discovered why our spider wasn't getting the job done...our pastel is a male!!! Ugh! The pastel was sold to us as a female so I'm headed back to the Guy who sold her to us tomorrow! I'm so dissappointed! Also our citrus pastel who we thought was a female is a male. Now we have 5.1 and the one female is only 140 gram normal! So...I guess we need to start looking for larger females...lmao.

Are you experienced with probes? In my opinion popping is way more reliable than probing

I've done both a few times but am no expert by any means! The pastel probed to 8 scales! =/

Yeah there is no way to probe a female as a male unless you force the probe in.
That really sucks. This is why I always probe females right when they get home just to make sure. Males are rarely mis-sexed.

I definitely didn't force the probe, actaully probably could have gone a little further but by 6 or 7 scales after probbing TWICE I knew it wasn't a female... oh well... we didn't plan to start breeding for a little bit anyways so we still have some time to get some females together. At least all the boys are up to weight! =)

The pastel is almost 2100 grams so I'd rather not pop him. I like the probes so much better.

You should learn to sex them by feel. On a snake that large, it is a piece of cake, and not invasive at all!

Before I learned how to sex, a breeder/pet store owner with 25+ yrs experience, was trying to tell me about feeling for gender. He got 3 of 4 wrong when attempting to sex my snakes by feel. I'm sure it can be done, but popping and probing is a definite when you know what you're doing...

So is feeling, I haven't got one wrong yet. It's easier to do on mature snakes. Most boa breeders I know use the feeling method exclusively.

How do you learn how to pop or feel? I would really know what sex our snake is and don't know of anyone around to do it for me. There is a guy not too far away, but he has been busy with work and we have not been able to get together.
