    Damn Petco

Stopped into Petco tonight on my way home to pick up some ceramic water dishes and saw this BP. Made me angry and sad that I could not help him/her out

They had like 7 BPs all in the same enclosure. Probably a 30 or so gallon aquarium. Looking at this one's shed I think their cheapy humidity gauge is way off....said it was 70%

Poor things. They seriously need to step up their game and reputation in animal care at petco.

Sadly its not the worst ive seen. Luckily in my store(petsmart) people will listen to me and im constantly checking on all of our herps. Feeding logs were practically nonexistant before I reworked how they did them and now people in my pet care area are knowledgable enough that they dont need to be policed like they used to and our reptile area is actually in really good shape now. What I would do if I saw reptiles in that position is speak one in one with the store manager, and explain that reptiles are not getting the care they need in his store and he should look into hiring someone with previous experience working with them.

Some will care, some will not. If the manager had it their way they wouldnt even have reptiles. THey lose money caring for them because reptile sales arent as frequent. But pointing out that while thwy dont make the store money, they do make he store look like 1) they dont care, and 2) that it isnt well managed. Even bring him over to have a look himself. Having a specific thing that makes the store look like it isnt well run is the most embaressing thing you could do to them, and it may force them to crack down on their team.

    Re: Damn Petco

Back when I worked for Petco our store manager would routinely go around with a spray bottle and directly soak the humidity gauges in the herp enclosures, intentionally getting water inside of them to throw off the readings in case somebody from district showed up for a surprise walk of the store.

Petco needs to stick with selling dog and cat food, leashes, and toys etc.

Upsets me that they try to make themselves the vendor for animals as well...when it is clear that they are just selling the animals and not educating and leading by example.

Or at least hire some one who knows more about our scaly friends besides they think scales are yucky...

Its their fault for not hiring people who know what theyre doing, and for not training effectively yes. But personally I consider anyone who recognizes what theyre doing and does not do anything about it(ie speak to management throw a fit to corporate, write a letter, at least bring it to someones attention etc) Just as responsible for the reptiles condition, on the grounds that we let them get away with it, so it happens again. Its fine to be angry about it, but non action wont ever solve it and ranting will only do so much. In order to invoke change you have to apply the right kind of pressure.

I agree with you completely. However as I am still a new BP owner I don't feel qualified to speak with the manager about it. I hadn't thought about contacting their corporate office though. Thanks for the idea. I'll try to today :o
