While this is true and I agree 100%, if pet stores actually provided a quality animal with sound advice, I wouldn't really care about the prices much.

I used to work at a Pet(NotSo)Smart a few years ago. I flat out refused to sell a lot of animals and it always ended up the same. An angry customer who demanded they speak to my manager. Then the manager would ALWAYS sell them the animals. I didn't stay there long. I remember my last customer, actually. It was a teenager kid and his mom who insisted I sell them a rat and they were going to keep it in one of those little plastic containers used for short transportation of dwarf hamsters and mice (it was about the size of a small critter keeper) and were going to feed it bird seed. The manager ended up making that sale as well and sent the poor animal home in the little cage that it could barely even turn around in.

The same store actually insisted we mark down that the snakes ate even when they didn't eat (the very rarely ate). I got several write ups because I refused to falsify such information and had no problems telling my customers the truth about their eating habits.
