It's not "smart"--- it's just good old Pavlovian reflex training. It's more or less unconscious, and sometimes it works on dumber animals better than on smarter ones.

And I don't know cage aggression is a myth, because my black pastel male is a classic example. If I feed him in the tub twice in a row, I can expect him to bite me the next time I open the tub. If I feed him in a different container, he stops after a couple meals. And George, bless his sweet little heart, is quite possibly the world's dumbest ball python.
