Re: Severe Neck Kink - Help?

Snakes have two major sets of muscle: One attached to the spine to allow movement and direction, and a thin layer of muscle attached to the skin to allow for the shuffling movement that propels the snake's body forward. Neither of these sets of muscle are attached to one another, allowing explanation for the look of the injury. In this case, the spinal muscle is the problem.

Needless to say, I went back to the vet today.

Last night her neck contracted again. My vet gave me an explanation along these lines: "The muscle that runs along her spine is caught between the spinal bones right there, so when she moves the wrong way, that muscle is pinched and contracts, causing what you are seeing. Gradually, over time, she loosens the muscle by pushing and twisting, and her neck straightens out, but any time she moves wrongly again, it will contract."

He says that the muscle gives her little to no pain, and that she may grow out of it. It has been concluded that it wasn't caused by my brother, but instead is a birth defect x.x

Apparently I have to just feed her when it is straightened out x.x *Sighs* If she does grow out of it, she'll be breedable, but if not...

I don't know what to do guys. He gave me the option of putting her down, but I don't know whether to take it, or wait and hope that she does grow out of this.

Anyways, I got these pictures. The kink isn't as bad as it was the first time, so who knows.

What do you think? I don't want her to have to live with any pain at all, but I don't know... D:

I can't see how it being stuck between her spine wouldn't cause any pain

I guess it's a quality of life thing, just keep a close eye on her, see how/if she eats when un kinked. I would hate to think what would happen if it kinked mid swallow...

Hope she will be ok. If she were mine I think I would give her a chance.

I wouldnt breed her. If it was a birth defect then there is a chance that it is hereditary. I wouldn't take the chances of having all her babies kink in the egg or have it when they come out. I think she will be a fine pet. But as a breeder I would say no, please dont take the chance and make more bp's go through this.

    Just my 2 cents.

    No snakes anymore!

    X 2

Who knows if she will even try to eat. I dont quite understand how a vet could say, "it really doesn't bother here"

@reptiliachnids: Thanks, I hadn't thought of the possibility of it being hereditary... So then definitely no for breeding her.

I know I have a terrible sense of humor...but don't breed her. We don't need a trend of kinky zig-zag snakes catching on XD

Thanks for posting update. I also wouldn't breed her. I would see how things go for a month or so, and maybe make a decision at that point what to do with her. She may be doing good, or maybe she can't eat and then you would have your answer.
