I have no experience breeding yet but i would personally follow the advice of what jonathan said, thats similar to what ive read in books.

I would stick with the substrate method from now on Heather, no need for more scares like this lol

Yea my last clutch went right on the substrate. I'll leave the substrate-less method for everyone else, lol.
