Generally we would have admitted you at least overnight to control the DKA. Illness is often what set that kind of thing off. Sounds like you picked up something viral, that will probably clear in a week or so.
I am a bit surprised they just let you walk out of there (it is always your choice, just seems they would have tried harder, then again I did not see your labs). The problem is that that the longer you are in that state (and the more often) you cause pretty intense damage to the kidneys and heart. Diabetes is also the leading cause of non-traumatic amputations here in the States.
Not meaning to lecture, but you really should consider letting them keep you next time to get it in line quicker.
