No. But someday i would like to own a giant snake. Unfortunately, it will be completely illegal by the time I'm ready for one.

Not just your State...your City or County can ban an animal by as well.

A felony is a federal offense. It's a pretty big deal to be even in federal court. It's usually for murder, kidnapping, assault/battery, rape, selling large amounts of drugs, etc. So yes, a felony means you better have your a** covered good, otherwise if you're convicted you're going to federal prison.

I guess they're treating snakes like drugs, lol.

Injurious Wildlife Listing Enacted Today

Today US Fish & Wildlife Service enacted a rule adding four constricting snakes to the Injurious Wildlife List of the Lacey Act; Burmese python, N. African python, S. African python and Yellow anaconda. It will now be a felony to import or cross state lines with these four animals, their eggs, or their hybrids. Possession, breeding and trade within your state is allowed unless there is a state law violated. Export is allowed as long as the animals exit the country from a designated port of entry without making a connecting flight, or landing within the United States. All flights must directly exit the United States.

1. NO on IMPORT.

2. NO on INTERSTATE TRANSPORT.

3. YES POSSESSION, BREEDING & TRADE IN LEGAL STATES IS ALLOWED.

4. YES EXPORT THROUGH DESIGNATED PORT OF ENTRY WITH NO US CONNECTION IS ALLOWED.

If you get caught with a single illegal species and are a private owner you're probably not going to do jail time. But, you will most likely pay a fine and most importantly, you will lose your snake.

Depends on how the law is written by the state, county, or city.
Also depends on what jurisdiction it falls under, Fish and game, animal control, or something else.

A felony is a federal offense.

Incorrect. A felony is simply a serious crime, generally one for which the sentencing guidelines include at least the possibility of a prison sentence greater than 1 year. There are both state and federal felonies, and crimes like murder, rape, and burglary are usually state felonies. Any of them can be federal felonies if they occur on federal property, involve the crossing of state lines, or involve a federal employee in some way. (Assaulting a police officer is a state felony, whereas assaulting an FBI agent is a federal felony.)

The only crimes that are ALWAYS federal felonies are violations of federal laws. (Lacey Act violations being a good, thread-relevant example.)

Also, it is possible for a crime to be a federal misdemeanor. If a misdemeanor is committed in such a way that the jurisdiction is federal, then it's a federal misdemeanor. (Petty theft crossing a state line or on federal property, for example.)
