Re: How to cool off my mice?

clam down. i live in Houston and we have rats and mice and we get 100 degree weather
I keep live rats for my snake. I buy 4-6 rats a month . guess what every once in a while one one would die, no matter what i did. UNTIL I DID THIS....
Get rid of any wood shaving bedding and go to Walmart and get this stuff called CRITTER CARE cost maybe like 4 bucks for a package of it . Don't get the colored stuff, blue, green and pink or whatever, unless u want to pay almost 3 times that.
mice and rats are susceptible to lung infections from some woods that they use for bedding.. The CRITTER CARE rocks, i have not lost one since.
Keep the water bottle and the food at the same end of the tank cuz thats where they are ganna pee and poop the most. tilt the tank a little to keep the pee down at one end.

Ah ok, thank you everyone! I will keep an eye on them now but I will assume they are fine then. I had just thought over 70 F was too high from what I've read, but I suppose those people may not have known what they were talking about (as I've noticed from numerous care sheets online...).

Oh, I didn't see your post Robin but thank you as well. Although I use aspen shavings over care fresh/critter care stuff for all my rodents (feeders and pets) because I find that care fresh gets terribly dirty and sometimes even moldy EXTREMELY quickly I mean in less than 3 days or so... I had to change the bedding almost every day. I just prefer aspen because for my animals that don't make a whole lot of mess when they potty (my mice and hamsters) I clean it maybe once a week or two times, same as my big potty makers like my pet rats (and eventually feeder rats). Only thing I don't use it for is rabbits, they're just so messy lol.
Although you're right about rats & mice being prone to respiratory disease, aspen shavings aren't as bad as a lot of people may say they are; the only time I've had problems with excess dust is at the bottom of the bag, which I just trash anyways to avoid the risk. I've owned a lot of rats before but have always found aspen my favorite bedding to use, it's fairly cheap around here too

yeah, to me its not so much keeping them alive as it is to keep the rat tank from STINKING. rats are a lot more work than a snake. lol .. I'm ganna run a little experiment soon. ill let u how it turns out.
As for the moment, i'm ticked off at my supplier. i bought 6 rats, when i saw them i told the girl no, i said rats, they were so small, i thought they were mice. not only that, they were 4 dollars instead of 3 dollars each . Now i get to sit here and feed them untill they are big enough for my snake.

Oh gosh, that's terrible They weren't babies right? I hate when people don't take care of their animals because they may only see them as an item to sell. I can't say that's what your supplier thinks but I just mean in general, as I've seen many instances like that.

(Not sure how to forum rules are against going off topic when it's the OP doing it lol... but if you want you can message me to reply, I wouldn't want us to get in trouble haha)
