For pit bull owners =]
I know this is a snake forum, but I think we and pit bull owners suffer in a similar way.. Here's a cool story =]. Not sure if it's legit, but it's a nice story and the doggy's face is adorable

Man, I love most dogs, but honestly I find no sympathy in pitbulls...
My oldest Shih-tzu was almost killed (she's alive, but with permanent muscle damage) because of a stray pitbull that came into our yard last year. And I've been bitten by 2 different 'trained' Pitbulls throughout my life. I think they really hate me

Then you were around people who can't control their dog. Pit bulls ( and I use that as a general term for the uninformed, because there is no such thing as a pit bull. There are American pit bull terriers, American staffordshire terriers, staffordshire bull terriers, and American bullies) are naturally dog aggressive. It's genetic. Not all of them are, but it's common. Just like a German shep, or rottie are known to be human aggressive. They are a protective breed.
As for a pit. They should never be human aggressive. That is a trait highly frowned apon in the breed. Yes they may protect their family, but most pits know no strangers. If you were bitten by one then my guess is the dog was stressed and you happened to make it or the situation made it feel threatened enough to act out.
As for the attack on your dog, that a pit doing what they were bred for for hundreds of years. It sucks I know. That's like being upset with a border collie herding sheep. It's what they were bred to do.
I'm so tired of people and the media making this breed out to be monsters. The people who own one has to be able to deal with all the good and bad traits of the breed. That means controlling a DA dog.
To the OP. great story. Sorry for the rant. I just can't stand the bad rep.

I'm not really a dog person, and the only time I've ever had an interaction with a pit bull, it was awesome. When I was with my last ex, I met her huuuuge pit bull, and she was the sweetest and most happy dog I've seen. Unfortunately her passive pit allowed her family's bikes to get stolen... Apparently the thiefs befriended the big dog and managed to just hop the fence and take the bikes..
I'm sorry to hear about your shih-tzu.. I don't trust any stray dog. We brought in a stray retriever who seemed super friendly to us, but he got a hold of my favorite cat and killed her... I was about 9 years old when I saw my only cat being violently shaken to death by a dog we tried to help.
I still think dogs are amazing animals, and I think the way the dog turns out is dependent on the owner. If it's a stray, then you should notify animal control immediately in case it's dangerous to you or your pets.

I get you, same thing applies to snakes, people and media make them like the worst animals out there, but we owners know that it isn't true.
Is having no having sympathy for them ignorant? Maybe. But chances are that if you had the same experiences that I've had with them, you wouldn't have any (sympathy) either. It's not like I'm wishing death to any of them, nor do I have anything against them. Just sharing a 'story'.
Due to those past 'encounters' I can assure you that I, personally, am more afraid of them that I am of a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, and yes, I handled them in the wild (in New Mexico). I know it should be the other way around, but it can be very easy for a kid to remain traumatized after such an incident.
And I KNOW that because of those events, it doesn't imply them being monsters, I know lots of people with extremely well behaved Pit-Bulls (sorry for term, I'm uninformed as you say)
Sorry, not trying to start a ...storm.

I've Been bit, scratched, whipped and hissed at by more snakes and lizards than I can even begin to count. and I still love, respect and sympathise for each and every one of them. APBT’s are without a doubt the most loyal, intelligent, and persecuted dog on the planet IMO. Sounds to me like you need to take a closer look at the people that you live near that have really caused the unfortunate problems you’ve encountered with the breed. And try not to let those experience’s could your opinion of these wonderful animals.

I agree. My friend used to be scared to death of any dog higher than her knees.. When she was younger, she was petting a dog, and another kid pulled the dog's tail.. the dog bit her and she's been scared ever since... She finally got a dog (a ugly-faced one ) because the owner couldn't take it anymore and her mom decided to bring it home... Now when we go to the reptile store, there's these 2 big buff dogs that rush over to us to sniff us, and she didn't flinch... she even touched one... LOL. I think once you've had more GOOD experiences than bad, you'll come around =]. Pit bulls (i'm also uninformed ) really are extremely loyal, and I wish you have better experiences in the future =]. I feel like certain dogs hate me too haha
