    Picked this up yesterday...

Think there's any use I can put to it as a cage unit/rack with some time and effort?

I really like it, although it helps that I got it for free. Not sure what it's made of or how sturdy it really is. It came with a back but it was more like a poster board for a science project so I took it off. I also love the coathangers on the side, hehe. Very nice touch.

The INSIDE dimensions of the whole thing are 29" long x 12" wide x 42" tall.

So what do you think? Suggestions, ideas? It seems like it's in pretty good condition. I had to clean it off some with a magic eraser but otherwise it's nice.

The shelves are all interchangeable so I can change the heights of each shelf easily, and I can buy a couple more shelves as well.

Looks like it is made of partial board. If it is I wouldn't use it for snakes if it is. Partial board has some nasty chemicals in it and won't deal with the humidity well.

Good to know, thanks! Because I'm curious - what kind of chemicals does parcial board contain?

Acetone, benzaldehyde, benzene, butanone, ethanol, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde, hexanal, methylene chloride, propaol, terpenes, tolune, xylenes...

You really couldn't do that much with it. I wouldn't use flexwatt with it because I'd be worried about a fire or the plastic melting. It also doesn't have any restraint to keep the snakes from pushing the tubs around. Use it for your shoes or something.

    EDIT:

And apparently there are also 16 UNKNOWN synthetic chemicals in it. Nice...

Adhesives, anti-mold/fungicides, and a few others. The exact chemicals vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but I have heard a few cases where the chemicals ended up being toxic to the snakes in the rack. Personally it's too big a risk for me. If you want to move forward I would suggest that you try to seal the entire thing.

Thanks, I don't think I'll be using it for herps with all this information. It was free to me, so it's no loss. I needed a new shelf in my room anyway.

Sounds like a good idea to me! Hey, the coathooks will be used now
