I don't mind if someone says, "I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to that--let me get someone who does/direct you to a book that will have the information". What is it with people who can't just say "I don't know"? How hard is that?

Giving out spurious information to make themselves look knowledgeable when they aren't is just plain damaging, and honestly, it makes them a terrible person. I can't imagine someone doing that, knowing that an animal could die as a result of their uncertain information. If they don't realize that it's serious...then they're not bright enough to be doing the job they're doing. Minimum wage or no. They should be put into a position where they don't talk to customers.

This made me laugh. Then, when I thought back on it, I laughed even more.

Re: Silly old Pet shop girl

I can understand them not going home from work and spending hours upon hours upon hours researching every last fact about the animals that they keep, but at the same time, they should at least take the time to learn the basics. I mean you can ask anyone in that store a question about dogs, or about cats. Probably even the rodents, and you'd probably get pretty informative and accurate answers. But ask them about a snake, or one of the other reptiles, and they're idiots.

When I was looking at tanks for my BP, They told me to get something bigger than a 40 gallon, because by the time Lazy hits the one year mark, he'd be too big for it D:

Anyways. I think that if an animals well being was depending on my being well - informed, I'd do my homework and find out what they need to be happy and healthy.

I am a strange one. I Love working with the public, and the meaner and madder they are, the better I saw them as a challenge to either educate, or to make look a fool and in turn make them see the foolishness in what they were saying, and then having them thanking for spending the time with them I do not care how upset they get, know my job, and know that figuring out what is really wrong can be the beginning of a better life for their pet. I work for a vet, and we see many mad mad people. I have been told I am going to Heii more times than once, but remained calm and nice. The nicer you are, the more it irks someone and it becomes very hard to continue to be ugly to someone who refuses to be ugly back. Then, as a last resort, I tell them that our first concern is their pets well being and it they did not feel their needs were been met, then we simply could not in good faith serve them. That would be against our goals. Then 9 times out of 10 they ask to stay and be seen, but rarely do we allow it. Depends on my gut feeling. Having a sick or injured animal can be stressful and some people are just downright ugly when stressed. Getting kicked out of a vet clinic sometimes is the eye opener they need. I even offer to call another clinic for them and see if they have time to see them. My old boss sure misses me now...

Is it trolling to disagree with established members of the forum. Shame on me for disagreeing about mundane opinions of the elders.

So now pet store employees purposely give out dubious info? Am I reading this right?

Yes, I believe many of the purposely give out information that they are NOT certain of. I believe most of them know that they haven't done any reading or research on the animals they're talking about, and that the information they're giving out hasn't been verified in any way, and may not be true.
